STORY
ACT I
Carla’s Controlled Life
CARLA KING is a sharp, capable sales executive in her late 30s who has perfected emotional avoidance.
After losing her husband unexpectedly several years earlier, Carla has devoted herself entirely to work, routine, and raising her daughter. Her life is stable, productive, and emotionally closed off.
She doesn’t date.
She doesn’t risk.
She survives.
At work, Carla is assigned a major project tied to a high-profile karaoke-centered promotional campaign. The campaign has enormous financial implications for her company and could finally position her for the promotion she has worked years to achieve.
To better understand the culture surrounding the campaign, Carla reluctantly enters the world of karaoke apps and livestream singing communities.
What begins as research slowly becomes something else.
Discovering the Karaoke World
Carla enters a vibrant global community where strangers connect through music.
Night after night, she witnesses:
- emotional duets between people on opposite sides of the world,
- friendships formed through shared songs,
- and individuals expressing truths they struggle to communicate in real life.
The world surprises her.
It’s funny. Chaotic. Diverse. Honest.
Most importantly—it makes her feel something again.
Her outspoken best friend, NIKKI, immediately embraces the fun and pushes Carla deeper into the experience. Nikki becomes both comic relief and emotional catalyst, encouraging Carla to stop hiding behind work and begin living again.
Through the app, Carla encounters two very different men.
Sterling
STERLING is charismatic, polished, wealthy, and magnetic—a successful studio executive who understands how to make people feel special.
He immediately recognizes Carla’s intelligence and talent.
Sterling offers her attention, access, and opportunity. He presents himself as a man who can elevate her personally and professionally. Their flirtation grows quickly, fueled by music, ambition, and emotional chemistry.
But Sterling carefully adapts himself depending on who he speaks to. He is always performing.
Kenji
KENJI is the opposite.
Quiet, grounded, technically gifted, and emotionally sincere, Kenji works behind the scenes as a technician connected to the karaoke community. Unlike Sterling, Kenji never tries to impress Carla.
He simply sees her.
Their connection develops slowly through conversation, humor, shared musical moments, and emotional honesty.
At first, Carla barely notices what is happening between them.
But the audience does.
ACT II
Carla Begins to Open Up
As Carla immerses herself further into the karaoke community, her emotional walls begin to crack.
Music becomes her emotional outlet.
For the first time since her husband’s death, she experiences:
- attraction,
- joy,
- vulnerability,
- and hope.
A pivotal duet performance reveals the depth of Carla’s emotional transformation. While singing, she momentarily stops performing for others and begins expressing genuine emotion.
The experience terrifies her as much as it heals her.
The Threat Beneath the Romance
At the same time, Carla’s work project becomes increasingly unstable due to production setbacks, financial pressure, and complications tied to Sterling’s involvement.
Sterling grows more controlling and manipulative beneath his polished exterior.
Carla begins noticing inconsistencies:
- conflicting stories,
- suspicious behavior,
- and signs that Sterling may be using both her emotions and her business position for personal gain.
This marks a critical turning point in Carla’s arc.
Instead of remaining passive, Carla chooses to investigate for herself.
Together with Nikki—and with help from members of the karaoke community including Kenji, Tommy, and others—Carla begins testing Sterling’s intentions.
But unlike earlier versions of herself, Carla is no longer simply reacting.
She is finally trusting her instincts.
Carla’s Emotional Conflict
The deeper Carla falls into this world, the more she is forced to confront the truth she has avoided for years:
She never truly allowed herself to grieve.
By focusing entirely on work, motherhood, and control, Carla convinced herself she was protecting her heart.
In reality, she stopped living.
Her growing feelings for Kenji force her to confront a terrifying question:
Is she ready to love again?
ACT III
The Truth About Sterling
The investigation exposes Sterling’s manipulative behavior and confirms Carla’s fears.
Sterling’s interest in Carla was never entirely genuine. He viewed her talent, access, and vulnerability as opportunities to exploit.
The revelation hurts—but it also awakens Carla.
For the first time in years, she chooses not to retreat emotionally.
Instead of collapsing back into isolation, Carla finally embraces honesty—with herself and others.
Carla Chooses Life
In the aftermath, Carla reflects on the emotional prison she has created around herself since her husband’s death.
She realizes her greatest fear was never losing love again.
It was risking vulnerability.
Kenji arrives not as a savior, but as someone willing to meet her honestly.
Unlike Sterling, Kenji never tried to sell Carla a fantasy.
He simply offered presence, patience, and truth.
Carla makes the final emotional choice herself.
Not because she needs someone to complete her—
but because she is finally ready to live fully again.
ENDING
In an intimate final moment, Carla and Kenji share a quiet duet together—private, vulnerable, and free of performance.
For the first time in the film, Carla is not singing for approval, attention, or escape.
She is singing honestly.
The music no longer hides her emotions.
It reveals them.
And for the first time since loss shattered her world—
Carla feels alive again.
FADE OUT.
